Product Description

Personal, family letters that lay hidden in the author’s attic for 50 years reveal the first person accounts of fear, pain and suffering that one Jewish family endured in their frantic bid to escape the Nazi hordes. Juxtaposed against these letters are short, powerful data reports that put the action into historical context and highlight the world’s indifference to what was happening to the Jews in Europe.
Chaim Rockman has lived in Israel since the creation of the State. During the First Gulf War his sister told him about a box of old letters she had found while searching for her gas mask. After the War, Chaim opened the box only to discover that all that he had known about his parents and their relatives had been only half-truths. With the help of the Yad Vashem Archives and his own interviews with over 80 individuals, Chaim was able to piece together what had happened to his family during the Holocaust, and soon uncovered the truths that his father had been afraid to tell him.

Chaim has a degree in Current History of the Middle East and Islam from Hebrew University, and is fluent in a number of languages. He is married to Eva, a scientist, and they have four children, two of whom serve in the Israeli Defense Forces, and two grandchildren.
