Product Description

Translator: Eliyahu Munk

This significant commentary on the Torah elucidates many major philosophical issues, such as the relationship between Torah and man-made philosophy, the conflict between faith and reason, and the seeming paradox of man's free will versus G-d's knowledge of the future. Rav Arama emphasizes that the Torah always takes precedence when in conflict with human reasoning.

A challenging and thought-provoking work!

About the author:
The author, Rabbi Isaac ben Moshe Arama lived in Spain from 1420–1494. He was a Rabbi, philosopher and preacher. As a young man, he taught at Zamoar, then served as rabbi in Taragona and Fraga in the province of Aragon. Later, he was appointed Rabbi of Calatayud where he wrote most of his works. After the expulsion of the Jews from Spain in 1492, he settled in Naples, Italy. There he died in 1494. He is best known for his Akeydat Yitzchak, which was published in Salonika in 1522, and is written in the form of philosophical homilies and allegorical commentaries on Pentateuch. The work contains one hundred and five chapters; each forms a complete sermon, divided into two parts, Drishah, investigation, and Prishah, exposition.
The translator, Eliyahu Munk, was born in Frankfurt on Main, where he received his education at the Samson Rafael Hirsch Realschule, and the Yeshiva of the late Rabbi Joseph Breuer, of blessed memory. He continued his education at the Yeshiva in Gateshead, England. He served in Jewish education (primarily as a teacher) for almost 30 years in Toronto, Canada.
